On Thursday 10th November a charity lunch, organised by John Casson, took place in aid of The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. Nearly 70 guests attended the event, sponsored by Brewin Dolphin and Private Cellar, they enjoyed a highly entertaining talk from Sir Michael Parkinson and a memorable lunch created by Gidleigh Park’s double Michelin Star Chef, Michael Caines MBE.
Guests were enthralled to hear Sir Michael talk about his childhood growing up in Yorkshire, his Father’s ambitions for him to be a cricketer and his years in television, regaling the audience with some fascinating anecdotes from his most famous interviews including Mohammed Ali.
His visit was ultimately to raise funds for the Royal Marines and on Wednesday John Casson accompanied Sir Michael and Lady Mary on a visit to Hasler Company based in the Royal Navy’s facility at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth. They saw how the Royal Marines are cared for after injury as a result of conflict and accidents. The aim of Hasler Company is to rehabilitate injured Royal Marines for return to active duty or to prepare them for civilian life. Sir Michael and Lady Mary found the visit deeply moving and inspiring.
Special guest Major General Gordon Messenger addressed the audience explaining the work of the charity, he spoke of the incredible bravery, optimism and good nature exhibited by the Royal Marines, his powerful words struck a chord with the audience who gave generously during the auction. This was a lively event with some amazing lots including a limited edition copy of John Casson’s book Afghan Faces signed by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh which sold for £650 and contributed to an incredible total of just over £25,000 being raised on the day.
